As you know, SCIS has been engaged in discussions with the Scottish Government, Learning and Teaching Scotland, and Research Machines (RM) regarding how schools in the independent sector might best partake of the GLOW service. While most schools see the benefits of linking up with the national provision, there are a range of issues that need to be considered, including the cost of the core provisions, and the support package that is required.
The current GLOW contractual arrangement is that RM only work directly with local authorities (and others such as the SQA). To be part of the GLOW Community, schools are required to meet standards for acceptable use polices, and to provide a range of support including: staff training, technical support, and first-line help to deal with any practical issues.
The costs to schools would consist of 2 parts: the direct costs associated with providing the service, for example, additional storage capacity at RM; and the additional costs associated with providing support, which would otherwise be provided by local authorities, for example, the first-line help desk. We are continuing to explore which of these costs are integral to the proposal, and which might be separated out in some way.
Heads and others with budget responsibility for ICT provision are encouraged to take this opportunity to find out more about the service that is provided, the costs associated with this service, and the full range of options for providing the services.
(NB Heads who are unable to attend this seminar may wish to join a representative group on a visit to the GLOW office in Bellshill on the afternoon of Thursday 28 August, when RM will demonstrate the support that they are providing to local authorities. Please telephone Fiona on 0131 226 9247 if you would like to attend at RM's office on 28 August.)
