This course is aimed at Geography Teachers, but other teachers (eg history, literature and biology) may recognise the value of the course for their subject area and they are very welcome to attend.

This practical workshop shows teachers how to use Google Earth both in the classroom and on field trips and educational visits. The course starts by covering the basics of Google Earth, the different navigation options, use of layers and the use of placemarks. This makes the course accessible to all regardless of experience using Google Earth and is a useful refresher for more experienced users.
The course then looks at how teachers and pupils can start to create their own content. Each participant will learn how to make a Google Earth tour on a given topic, attaching information, images and videos to placemarks.
The second half of the course focuses on using digital cameras and GPS units to capture information from the local area and put this ‘real' information into Google Earth. After a brief mini fieldtrip in the local area, participants will return to complete their own Google Earth tour, ending in a look at what each pair has created and a discussion around its application in the classroom.
The course is suited to teachers who would like to advance beyond using Google Earth as a virtual atlas. Participants from all subjects are welcome and will learn how to use Google Earth to create their own resources.

Course trainer
The course will be led by Jamie Buchanan-Dunlop, director of Digital Explorer (www.digitalexplorer.com). Digital Explorer is a social enterprise that engages young people in global issues for a better future. Our unique projects utilize the latest communication technologies to bring the frontier of science and exploration live to the classroom. As part of this work, Jamie first trialed using Google Earth on a youth expedition to Morocco in2006 and since then has popularized its use by teachers in the UK. Before running Digital Explorer fulltime, Jamie was a humanities teacher in London for four years.
