Non-teaching staff in independent schools work in areas including finance; administration; marketing; admissions; ICT and technology; librarianship; alumni relations and fundraising; pupil care and welfare; nursing; catering and janitorial posts. Vacancies are usually advertised in local press and references taken up prior to interview. Salaries are usually in line with equivalent posts in local authority schools or the appropriate business discipline.
Pay and conditions for non-teaching staff
Pay and conditions of service for non-teaching staff are agreed between employer and employee. Non-teaching posts are generally not restricted to term-time and holiday entitlements vary. Many independent schools in Scotland participate in the Independent Schools' Pension Scheme, administered by the Pensions Trust, or other contributory schemes. A number of training workshops, seminars and conferences, organised by SCIS, e.g. for Librarians, School Secretaries, Marketing staff, Laboratory Technicians, Nurses and Matrons are available through a programme of Continuing Professional Development.
