Scottish Council of Independent Schools (SCIS)

The independent education sector in Scotland offers newly qualified, probationary teachers a rewarding and challenging experience in a purposeful learning environment. The sector employs 3,500 teachers and educates around 32,000 children of mixed abilities in nursery, primary and secondary schools - both mainstream and special needs.

All newly qualified teachers in Scotland must undertake a period of probationary teaching - usually a year - in order to obtain professional registration, known as Standard for Full Registration (SFR) with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS). Under the GTCS's Induction Scheme, newly qualified teachers can select the Local Authority areas in which they would like to work and a one year training post will be offered. GTCS, in partnership with the Scottish Government Education Department, is responsible for the scheme.

Permanent posts for probationary teachers in the independent sector

As a newly qualified teacher, you have the option of completing your probationary year at an independent school which is an attractive choice because all probationary teachers at independent schools are offered a full time, permanent post at the end of their probationary year, on successful achievement of the Standard for Full Registration (SFR).

GTCS regards teaching in the independent sector as part of "the flexible route" and a link is provided, right, explaining more.

You can apply direct to independent schools in response to job adverts which state that the post would suit a probationer. Posts are usually advertised on individual school websites, on the Jobs page of this website, in the Times Educational Supplement Scotland (TESS) and in national and/or local press.  If invited for interview, you will have an opportunity to meet staff and look around the school and its facilities. Prior to interview, references and a report will be sought from the institution where you completed your teacher training.

On the Probationer Teacher Scotland website, to which a link is provided on the right, probationary teachers share their experiences of being a probationer, of the transition to permanency, and of progressing their careers.  Helpful job hunting tips are also provided.

Supporting newly qualified teachers throughout their probationary year

Throughout your probationary year at an independent school, full support will be provided to help you develop your teaching skills. Weekly meetings, mentoring and guidance will be arranged with your Induction Tutor and there will be opportunities for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) through SCIS.

Pay and conditions for probationary teachers

Pay and conditions of service for probationary teachers are agreed with the relevant school. Most independent schools pay newly qualified teachers according to the national pay scales and many offer a contract of employment rather than a fixed term placement. Many independent schools participate in the Scottish Teachers' Superannuation Scheme.
