Support Staff
Support staff in independent schools - job opportunities and terms and conditions
Around 3,000 support staff (i.e. non-teaching staff) are currently employed in Scotland's independent schools, working in posts in the areas listed below:
- administration
- admissions
- alumni relations
- boarding and residential 'house parents'
- catering
- finance
- fundraising
- ICT and technology
- janitorial
- librarianship
- marketing
- nursing
- pupil care and welfare
Support staff contribute enormously to the life of each school and most are contracted to work throughout the calendar year, unlike most teaching staff who work in term time only. Holiday entitlements vary. Job vacancies are advertised in local (sometimes national) media and references are usually taken up prior to interview. Salaries are usually in line with equivalent posts in the relevant business discipline or local authority schools. Many independent schools in Scotland participate in the Independent Schools' Pension Scheme, administered by the Pensions Trust, or other contributory schemes for support staff.
SCIS offers workshops and seminars throughout the school year for school staff, including support staff.
