Meeting the Needs of the Sector

Professional Learning

The SCIS Professional Learning Programme is designed to equip colleagues in the sector with the knowledge, skills and abilities to enhance their professionalism and develop their careers.  We strive to deliver a comprehensive programme designed to meet the needs of the sector coupled with the demands of the ever-changing educational and legislative landscape.  Throughout the academic session, our programme provides opportunities for colleagues to engage with national agencies, learn from educational consultants and importantly work collaboratively with others from across the sector.

Participants can develop their knowledge, improve their skills and keep abreast of changes in regulations, guidance and curricular developments under the following headings:

  • Support Staff
  • Developing Practitioners
  • Middle team Leadership
  • School Leadership & Governance

Teaching Staff

Teaching staff are supported at the point of commencing their “teacher journey” with our 4-day Probationer Pathway culminating in one probationer representing the sector at the GTCS National Probationer event.  On-going Career-Long Professional Learning is supported through a focus on a range of areas including: curricular knowledge, pedagogy and pastoral care.  Leadership development is supported and encouraged by our Middle/School Leadership Programmes with coaching playing a key role within each.  Our school leadership programme and our coaching diploma have been accredited by the GTCS and can lead to Professional Recognition. In addition, a number of colleagues lead and contribute to subject/context based professional learning.

Support Staff

Support staff play a key role in our schools and SCIS strive to provide professional learning opportunities appropriate for a range of roles.  Classroom Assistants, Librarians, Marketing staff and Nurses have established conferences and networks.  Leadership development is encouraged through a dedicated 2-day team leadership course for support staff in a range of roles.
