Course Description

Governors' Conference: Roles/Responsibilities and Employment Law and HR Audit

The day will provide essential training for Governors in independent schools and will offer an excellent opportunity to network.  All Governors are warmly invited to attend.

The morning session will be run by David Nicholl LLB CPFA, Chief Executive of On Board Training and Consultancy Ltd.  David has trained more than 500 Boards of organisations in Scotland, Wales, England, Northern Ireland and beyond, and is the author of more than 20 publications on Governance.

‘On Board’ provides Trustees/Governing Body members with practical information and guidance on their roles and responsibilities, in particular how to discharge their legal duties under Scottish charity law, and other issues of accountability and governance.  It also provides practical advice on how to avoid some of the common pitfalls that Boards and Trustees can fall into, and how to manage some of the crucial relationships within and outwith the Board.

The morning session will be divided into two parts:

1              Fundamental Roles and Responsibilities – Getting it Right!

The role of the Board of Trustees

Case studies: fundamental principles of Board life

The duties of a Trustee under Scottish Charity Law

What are the distinguishing marks of an effective Trustee?

Roles of the Chair, Board Secretary and Principal

2              Managing Key Relationships – Internal and External

The afternoon session will be led by Navigator Law who have worked with a number of SCIS member schools in connection with Employment Law and HR Audits.  Colleagues from Navigator will provide and insight into the process and share good practice findings/outcomes from such.

The role of SCIS

John Edward, Director of SCIS, will finish the day with a look at the role of SCIS and support available to Governors and schools.
