Course Description

Obesity in our schools – A weighty issue

Speaker Professor Lora Heisler, Chair of Human Nutrition at the Rowett Institute, University of Aberdeen will discuss a growing and serious concern to the health of our pupils, obesity.  NHS Digital reports that 10% of children aged 4-5 are obese, rising to 20% of children by Primary 6.   Research indicates that children who are obese are likely to remain obese as adults, which increases their risk of major medical illness early in life such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer.  Professor Heisler will discuss the primary causes of obesity in children and strategies that we can implement to prevent and reverse obesity.

Also, Victoria Khan from Robert Gordon's College will be offering an overview of the service and discussion around the "Supporting Children with Healthcare Needs December 2017" document.
