The purpose of this workshop is to provide an update on the support that schools could be providing for probationers currently employed in their schools. It will be led by Elaine Napier, Senior Education Officer (Early Phase and Professional Learning), GTCS. The day will be segmented into three different aspects of the role:
Roles and Responsibilities
This session will consider operational aspects (meetings, observations, profiles, etc) and the information/advice that is available from the GTCS. There will be an opportunity for Q&A.
It is advocated that Supporters will ultimately adopt a coaching approach in the relationship. Consideration will be given to what this might look like and participants will practise some coaching tools that they may choose to use in this context.
Supporting Probationers with Enquiry
SCIS are eligible to nominate a Probationer for the national probationer event in June, and undertaking an Enquiry is a mandatory requirement for this (as it is with Probationers in the local authorities). In addition to gaining an insight into Enquiry, colleagues from the sector will share how it operates in their schools.
The day will provide an excellent opportunity to network with colleagues in this role, and work with Elaine who has extensive experience of working with probationers, supporters and managers: at school, authority and national levels.
It will provide suitable initial training for teachers who are new to the role of Supporter, and equally will provide a refresher for those who have some supporter experience. This event will also be suitable for colleagues supporting those who are on the Provisional (Conditional) route.
Please register as soon as possible and by 15 September at the latest.
