Course Description

For Junior School Practitioners

This is Day One of a 3-day programme which will be led by the Growing Confidence Team at Edinburgh City Council.

Mental Health and Wellbeing is a core component of Getting It Right and Curriculum for Excellence.  The Growing Confidence evidence based materials and training delivered by the City of Edinburgh Council’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Team supports the promotion of positive mental health and emotional wellbeing in staff, young people and families.

The Early Years/ Primary train the trainer package encompasses skilling up multi-agency practitioners to be able to deliver two programmes to groups of staff (Confident Staff, Confident Children) and parents carers (Raising Children With Confidence).  Over 2000 parents/carers and staff have benefited from these training programmes across the Lothians.

What is Raising Children with Confidence?

Raising Children With Confidence (RCwC) is a universal programme which aims to improve parents/carers understanding about positive mental health and emotional well-being and how to better promote it in themselves and their children.

During the 3 days the following topics will be covered:

  • Introduction to Emotional Health & well-being
  • Why do kids do that? (which covers brain development)
  • What’s love got to do with it?  (which covers attachment)
  • Cotton Wool Kids?    (which covers resilience)
  • Staying Connected?  (which covers empathy)
  • What makes us, us?  (which covers minding our own well-being)
  • 21st Century Childhood  (which covers media influences/summary of course)

The course does not cover in depth group work and facilitation skills. Therefore it is ideal that those attending have had facilitation and group work experience or training. Ideally, they would be used to running training with groups of staff or parents and may also be familiar with some of the themes covered.
