Scottish Council of Independent Schools (SCIS)

This new HMIE report is the second in the Learning Together series. It is based on evidence from around 300 HMIE follow-through inspections which were carried out between 2005 and 2008. HMIE undertook these visits to schools in which they had previously found important or major weaknesses. With support from their education authorities, many schools had addressed key weaknesses effectively and had moved to a level of satisfactory or better provision. The experience of these schools provides important insight into ways in which real improvement can be brought about quickly and effectively.

This report identifies the key factors which led to improvement. It also draws on evidence from other HMIE tasks which identified successful approaches to school improvement.

HMIE think that the key improvement factors which they have identified are relevant and applicable to all schools. They therefore believe that education authorities will be able to use the advice as they work to improve their schools, sustaining high performance and helping good schools to become great. The advice will help schools and education authorities as they work to implement Curriculum for Excellence.
