Vacancy Description / Summary

We are looking to appoint an Operations Manager who will work alongside the Finance Manager to oversee all business and non-educational aspects of the school and its estates. This is an important position and we are looking for an individual with a proven record of successful project management, together with the strategic ability to make a significant contribution to the future development of this successful and forward-looking school. The person appointed will be able to demonstrate a high level of commercial acumen and previous experience in a senior managerial role.

Wellington School is the only independent school in Ayrshire and the school roll is currently in the region of 500 (Nursery – S6). Year groups in the Senior School typically consist of approximately 50 pupils and most remain in the school until the end of S6. Pupils achieve outstanding results at all levels and the ‘A’ grade pass rate at Higher and Advanced Higher make Wellington one of the top performing schools in Scotland. The school currently employs approximately 90 members of staff, teaching and non-teaching.

The Operations Manager is responsible for the effective day-to-day management of all operational aspects of the school and makes a significant contribution to strategic planning. The responsibilities of the post include all aspects of estates management, health and safety, regulatory compliance and employment procedure. A separate document provides full details of the key responsibilities of the post.

The successful applicant is likely to be be a graduate with appropriate qualifications in one or more of the key areas of responsibility. He or she will be an experienced project manager, with a strong track record as a leader and administrator. Experience of working in the educational or charity sector is desirable, but not essential. The role requires a sound knowledge of both employment law and health & safety legislation and, as such, experience in these areas would be advantageous.

In addition, the person appointed will:

• Show integrity and empathy;
• Be able to communicate well with staff, parents, pupils, contractors and other agencies;
• Work well alone and as part of a team, with the ability to organise tasks and prioritise effectively;
• Be a committed and energetic ambassador for the school;
• Demonstrate vision and the capacity to engage and motivate others;
• Inspire confidence and respect.

In view of the responsibilities of this post, the Operations Manager is expected to live within a reasonable distance of the school and assistance with removal expenses may be available. All employees are eligible for some remission of fees.

This post becomes available on 1 April 2021 but the start time is negotiable.

A competitive salary will be offered, dependent on experience and commensurate with the importance of the role.

Applicants should complete the school’s Job Application Form https://www.wellingtonschool.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/application-form.pdf and provide a covering letter, both of which should be sent by email to vacancies@wellingtonschool.org. A CV is optional and may also be included. Interviews will be held in November. If you have further questions about the post, please contact the Headmaster: headmaster@wellingtonschool.org or 01292 269321.

The closing date for applications is Thursday 12 November 2020.
