Aspiring, new and experienced Directors of Sport
All aspiring, new and experienced Directors of Sport are welcome to participate in this bespoke programme which will be delivered virtually
This Programme is written, developed and led by two current UK Directors of Sport at the top of their profession – Pete Bignell and Dan King – and is designed to be 100% relevant for colleagues at every stage of their Leadership journeys.
Module one (Monday, 24th January 2022 19.00-20.30):Leadership ‘plain & simple’
The fundamental difference between just managing an area of a Sports Department and leading it well, with confidence.
We focus on accessing and working in the “2% mindset”, as well as building on the “why?”, the “how?” and the “what?”, including referencing work from Simon Sinek and his “Start with Why?”.
Module two (Monday 21st February 2022 19.00-20.30): Collaborative Leadership
The powerful actions we can take as Leaders to enhance our department and wider stakeholders’ development to ultimately provide lasting success.
We examine honesty, integrity, and accountability – combining it all with transparency in order to develop shared goals.
Module three (Monday, 21st March 2022 19.00-20.30): Strategic Leadership
The building-blocks behind shaping the direction of our department over time.
The focus is on you rationalising your own “Values”, so that you can ultimately define a “Vision” and “Strategy” for your own workplace.
Module four (Monday 25th April 2022 19.00-20.30): Operational Leadership
Managing the mechanics of the day-to-day operation required – to ensure that a multi-faceted Sports department is not only smooth, but also efficient and progressive.
Various staff competency scenarios are analysed and discussed, and how to manage the resulting conversations – both positive and challenging.
Module five (Monday 9th May 2022 19.00-20.30):Building your First Year Priorities into a Three-to-Five Year Plan
Identifying the common challenges faced by new Directors of Sport, and looking at various strategies which deal with the difficult moments and allow you to develop a holistic long-term plan for your department.
This is an opportunity to not only work through some real-life scenarios but also hear from various Directors of Sport on their own experiences. It is a 100% interactive session with both a short breakout room exercise and a Q&A session, where delegates get the opportunity to ask our panel questions on building trust and developing a strategic plan with a cohesive team.
Module six (Monday June 6th or 13th 2022 19.00-20.30):The Interview Process
A live exercise to test your learning through a range of interview questions and tasks.
Here, you must apply your entire self-reflected journey in the most pressured of environments – the interview. We use experienced Senior Leaders from our GRJ Education team to put you through your paces and offer you the opportunity to act as both the interviewee and as a peer observer. This enables you to experience the interview as well as to feed back on other colleagues’ performances.
Please note – if you are an experienced Director of Sport, module six is entirely applicable – you will also be placed on the interview panel, with support and feedback from our GRJ Education team on your performance as an interviewer!
**NB Colleagues registering for the first module will automatically be registered on the remaining ones**
