Virtual Professional Learning Event for Colleagues with a Pastoral Care Responsibility

We are delighted to welcome Hugh Smith MEd DipEdTech Dip(CE) LTCL(CMT) LLCM(TD) FHEA as our trainer.  Hugh is an experienced Education, Learning and Teaching Consultant, and Teacher Educator. A Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, has delivered a wide range of workshops and seminars.

This online professional learning event seeks to enhance knowledge and understanding of the mental health and wellbeing challenges that impact on both learners and colleagues. There will be opportunity for information sharing, contextualisation and robust discussion around accessible and workable strategies that contribute to personal solutions-based approaches. Colleagues will engage as a reflective practitioner, monitoring their own “fitness” to engage with learners, whilst identifying (and evaluating) appropriate protocols and procedures that will enhance the mental health and wellbeing offering for learners and staff within their education settings.

Session 1 STRESS

  • Challenges that make learners and staff vulnerable to stress 
  • Recognise when stress is having a negative impact on daily life 
  • Strategies for recognising and managing stress

Session 2 ANXIETY 

  • When Normal becomes a Disorder 
  • Recognising common types of anxiety disorder 
  • Impact of anxiety symptoms on learners and staff 
  • Strategies and interventions to address symptoms of anxiety in the learning environment


  • Presenteeism and Absenteeism 
  • Challenges within Learning and Teaching Contexts 
  • Vicarious Trauma * Maintaining a healthy mind and body 
  • Importance of rest and Sleep

Sessions 1 and 2 are contextualised within:- 

  • ‘Self’ as a Learning and Teaching Professional 
  • Young People as Learners 
  • The Learning and Teaching Environment.

Session 3 is contextualised within:- 

  • ‘Self’ as a Learning and Teaching Professional 
  • ‘Fitness’ to engage with young people in the Learning and Teaching Environment 
  • Managing the challenges of being an unintended Learner Role Model
