Vacancy Description / Summary

Merchiston Castle School is seeking to appoint new members to the Board of Governors. As Scotland’s only independent boarding school for boys, Merchiston’s genuine focus is on the needs of each pupil and understanding how to help him thrive. With the support of our caring community, each boy is encouraged to unearth his talents, pursue excellence and flourish in myriad ways.

Merchiston Castle is seeking individuals with a strong commitment to the School’s ethos and values. They should recognise the importance of high-quality learning, teaching and pupil support. Governors will contribute to a dynamic and influential Board, dealing with complex issues and promoting the highest standards of School governance.

We are particularly looking to attract applicants with relevant expertise in the following areas:
• Independent schools, single-gender education and boarding schools;
• Marketing, Legal Services and Property.

The governors and senior leadership team have embarked upon the development of a new strategic plan for the School. This strategic plan aims to position the School strongly for the new decade against a backdrop of an increasingly challenging market.

Governors appointments are subject to Safer Recruitment and PVG Scheme checks.

The appointment will be for a period up to three years, with the possibility of re-appointment for a further three years, subject to satisfying the requirements of the Articles of Association at the time of re-appointment.

This post is considered as Regulated Work with Children under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007.

Merchiston Castle is an equal opportunities employer. Applications are encouraged from under-represented groups.

Interested candidates can contact the Bursar and Clerk to the Board of Governors, Pippa Axon,, should they wish to discuss this post further informally.

Closing date for applications: Tuesday 7th December, 5pm. The date for first round of interviews will be confirmed thereafter.

About the School

Merchiston is a boys’ school in Scotland offering the English curriculum, and has a global, outward-looking dimension.

Merchiston takes pride in specialising in the education of boys and has an impressive record of helping boys excel far beyond their expected results at GCSE/IGCSE and A Level. Think about a wonderfully caring and nurturing environment, where they will learn to like learning more.

With an ethos based on traditional values, Merchiston encourages self-reliance and independence, as well as respect for and tolerance of others.

The main objective is to motivate pupils to try their hardest and to strive to achieve the highest levels possible in all areas - firstly academic, then cultural, sporting, leadership, and simply living together as a community.
