Vacancy Description / Summary

The High School of Glasgow is seeking to employ a dynamic, enthusiastic and inspirational Teacher of History from August 2021 to join our highly successful History Department.

The History Department currently consists of one part-time and three full-time teachers. There are three classrooms and a History Base. The Department is very well resourced. History is offered to all pupils from Transitus (Primary 7) to Sixth Year. Currently in Transitus pupils study History for three periods a week and in First and Second Year pupils have two periods a week of History.

In Transitus pupils follow an “Introduction to History” course; other topics include the Scottish Wars of Independence and castles. First Year pupils follow a course which includes units on the Norman Conquest and Mary, Queen of Scots. The Second Year course includes World War One and the Holocaust.

The Department’s academic record is excellent. In 2020, 100% of History candidates achieved passes at National 5 level, 89% at Grade A. At Higher, 100% of candidates achieved grades A-C, 64% at Grade A, and at Advanced Higher 95% of candidates achieved grades A-C.

In session 2020-2021, 52 pupils are studying History in Third Year and 52 in Fourth Year; 38 are taking Higher and 12 Advanced Higher.

The Department currently runs successful trips to the World War One Battlefields in France and Belgium for Third and Fourth Years and to Berlin for Advanced Higher.

Salary will be above the national scale. Application forms and further information may be downloaded from our website. The appointment will begin on Monday 16 August 2021. Candidates must be registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS).

The appointment will be subject to a successful application to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme.
