Event Description
All colleagues who have involvement in risk management or data protection are warmly invited to attend the SCIS Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIA) workshop. Two sessions; delegates will be required to book for both sessions
Independent schools are legally required to carry out Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIA) in a wide range of situations.
The UK GDPR makes it a legal requirement where special category data is processed on a large scale, and the ICO guidance lists further examples of commonplace situations where they require DPIA.
These include where organisations
- operate CCTV or video surveillance
- monitor staff
- use biometric technologies for identification purposes
- have AI technologies that use personal data
- process data that might endanger an individual’s physical health or safety in the event of a security breach.
This workshop is delivered in two parts. It is aimed at professionals who already have a basic understanding of data protection law, in particular the UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018 and the accompanying ICO guidance.
Session 1: 18th November, 9:30-11:00 am
Delegates will receive a presentation on the relevant law and guidance from the ICO on completing Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIA). Then delegates will work in breakout groups on practical scenarios that arise in the sector, for example video surveillance/CCTV at schools, and discuss/brainstorm how to identify and address risks as part of carrying out a DPIA while completing the ICO template form.
Session 2: 20th November, 9:30-11:00 am
Groups will re-join a plenary session to share and discuss approaches to the issues which arose, ask questions, and receive feedback and guidance.
