Event Description
This full day event aims to support professional understanding of the multi-layered complexities of harmful sexual behaviour (HSB) and explores contextual and rights respecting approaches in supporting children and young people. The input will support learners to gain further knowledge into the pathways and contributing factors that can lead to problematic or harmful sexual behaviour occurring and explores methods of prevention via psycho-educational and interpersonal interventions.
The event will cover the following areas:
· Healthy and developmentally expected sexual behaviour in children and young people
· Exploring the spectrum of sexual behaviour
· Defining harmful sexual behaviour
· Contributing factors to problematic and harmful sexual behaviour
· Risk and vulnerability factors
· Case studies and practice reflections
· Key working reflections from research
Learning Outcomes:
· Be able to explain the key terminology and definitions in relation to HSB
· Have an understanding of how to identify HSB
· Have an understanding of influencing factors of HSB
· Have an understanding of implementing safety plans and managing risk
· Have an overview of technology assisted harmful sexual behaviour (TA-HSB)
· Have an understanding of a contextual approaches to responding to HSB
We welcome David Russell to deliver this event. David is currently the Chief Executive Officer at Parent to Parent and has extensive experience specializing in work with children and young people with harmful sexual behaviour and / or who have experienced sexual abuse or exploitation. This includes providing assessments and interventions for vulnerable children, adolescents, and adults within the field of sexual harm and violence. He has also worked in custodial and secure settings. David provides training on a range of themes on sexual violence and has facilitated multidisciplinary training internationally. He currently sits on the NOTA (National Organisation for the Treatment of Abuse) Scotland Executive Committee, supporting professionals responding to sexual harm. He is the lead author of Restorative Justice & Sexual Harm: The Voices of Those Who Have Harmed) and is currently involved in a research project in collaboration with the University of Birmingham, exploring prevention strategies within incel subcultures. David is the lead author of ‘Harmful sexual behaviour & autism: supporting children and young people’ (Russell et al, 2026).
