Event Description
Join the LGBTQ+ SCIS Group for this important multi-strand event, hosted at the Sports Department of Fettes College, Edinburgh. The day will include the successful delivery of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion through school sports, with guest speaker and discussion panel, as well as peer and ally support for LGBTQ+ staff in the independent sector.
Suited to LGBTQ+ staff and allies with an interest in school sports, this event will take delegates towards a model of good practice for inclusion of LGBTQ+ students in sport. This will include the rationale behind a need for specific consideration of LGBTQ+ students.
Delegates will hear from LGBTQ+ sports professionals, LEAP Sports Scotland and representatives from grass roots LGBTQ+ sports in a valuable opportunity to assess the current situation in schools and the impact good inclusion practices can have in later life for current students.
In the afternoon, discussion forums will allow LGBTQ+ staff to share concerns and best practice relating to their own professional lives. Sports discussions will continue and allies will be given direct access to senior LGBTQ+ staff in the sector as part of the Ask Me Anything forum, where the difficulties and joys of ally-ship can be explored in a non-judgemental environment.
Training topics will include:
-
Understanding the latest EDI guidance for schools
-
Mapping statutory guidance onto best practice in the independent sector
-
Embedding EDI in sports practice
-
Hearing LGBTQ+ voices and having direct access to lived experiences in the sector
Learning outcomes:
-
Delegates will leave with a clearer understanding of the benefits of an EDI approach in sport
-
Delegates will explore what best practice could look like in the independent sector
-
Increased confidence for allies in approaching and discussing LGBTQ+ needs of both staff and students
-
Creating peer support relationships for LGBTQ+ staff across the sector.
The charge for this event is kept as low as possible, through the generosity of our host school and the voluntary structure of the steering group.
