Event Description
This three-part online course offers a practical and accessible introduction to the science of learning, designed for both primary and secondary educators.
Across the sessions, you will explore key principles of Cognitive Learning Theory, focusing on how attention, memory, and metacognition influence learning. We will consider how these insights can be translated into effective classroom strategies to enhance understanding, retention, and application across all stages, from early years to adulthood.
We will also examine the emotional and motivational factors that underpin pupil engagement and progress, including the importance of belonging, meaningful feedback, and strong connections. These sessions provide a rich blend of theory, practical tools, and reflective opportunities to support improved learning outcomes for all. Sessions can be booked individually, or as a three part course.
Session 1 An intro to the Science of Learning - 4 September
In this session, we explore the foundations of Cognitive Learning Theory and how internal mental processes influence learning. Our focus is on introducing a practical learning model and examining the neuroscience behind how we absorb and retain information. Key areas include attention, which involves directing our focus and filtering out distractions; information processing, the way the brain takes in, organises, stores and retrieves knowledge; memory and retrieval, the role of both short and long term memory and strategies to strengthen recall; and metacognition, helping us become more aware of our own thinking processes and how we can improve our learning approaches.
Session 2 Cognitive Science in Action - 2 October
Moving from theory to practical classroom application, we explore how to use cognitive science to support pupils in learning, remembering and applying knowledge more effectively. We consider cognitive load, understanding how to reduce overload and design learning more efficiently. We also focus on memory and retention, exploring ways to embed knowledge through structured teaching and regular revisiting. Finally, we look at practical classroom strategies that enhance understanding and help maximise learning outcomes.
Session 3 Emotion, Motivation and Connection - 6 November
We discover the vital role of emotion and connection in shaping learning environments and outcomes. This final session focuses on belonging and emotional safety, exploring how to create the right conditions for learning to thrive. We also consider motivation, understanding what drives effort, persistence and long-term learning. Finally, we examine feedback and relationships, looking at how building trust and using effective feedback can encourage progress and resilience.
