Event Description

Following the success of this event last year, we are delighted to welcome back Grant Whytock, a former secondary school Headteacher with a wealth of knowledge and extensive experience in effective timetabling and school operations, to deliver this highly practical one-day course.

Designed for those involved in timetable construction and school operations, Introduction to Effective Timetabling provides delegates with a clear overview of the principles and processes involved in building a secondary school timetable.

Through a combination of expert guidance, practical exercises and group activities, delegates will explore key aspects of the timetabling process, including data gathering, organisation, decision-making and the generic tasks involved in constructing a timetable from first principles. The session will also consider how timetabling can support curriculum flexibility, including approaches to subject choice, timetabling choice options within the BGE, and incorporating interdisciplinary learning (IDL) within CfE programmes.

Offering a hands-on learning experience, enabling participants to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to play an active role in the creation and management of their school's timetable. It is suitable for both new and aspiring timetablers, as well as those already using commercial timetabling software. A solid understanding of timetabling principles can help schools identify solutions when challenges arise within these systems and make more informed decisions throughout the timetable construction process.

By the end of the day, delegates will have a stronger understanding of effective timetabling and greater confidence in supporting the development of a timetable that meets the needs of their school.
